1. What is the origin of making ‘velas de concha’ or shell candles? Since when has it been practiced and where does it come from?
Shell candles were originally used in a Zapotec ritual; the marriage proposal, as a symbol of union and prosperity for the future married couple. The candles are also used for religious festivals and Day of the Dead offerings. Making these candles has been a tradition in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca for many generations and today we are preserving the techniques used by our ancestors.
2. Please tell us about the story of Velas Guille. How long has your family been making shell candles?
We are a family workshop and we have been making candles for 30 years. Guille (my mother) decided to take on this job to support our family. Over time, she innovated and created new candles in different shapes and colours.
3. Can you explain how a shell candle is made? How long does it take?
To make a traditional candle it takes around 2-3 days since the manufacturing process is detailed and precise. The moulds we use are made of clay or wood inspired by seashells; in ancient times our ancestors used seashells as moulds to create their flowers and assemble them onto the candles.
4. How do you design the candles and how do you choose or create the colours?
Traditional candles or ‘velas de concha’ have a specific design which consists of roses, lilies and beeswax fruits in the centre of the candle. Around the sides are various flowers inspired by nature found within our community. The wax is painted using natural dyes, such as cochineal or charcoal, to create various colours. Currently, we create candles to decorate spaces and homes, to adorn parties and to offer as gifts, among many other uses.
5. How did you learn the art of creating these candles? What inspires you the most?
I learned this beautiful work from my mother, my aunt and my grandmother. I learned it from a very young age watching these great women create this art with their hands. What inspires me the most is that this tradition continues to prevail for many, many years to come, as it is an art you won’t find anywhere else.
6. They say that there are now only eight families in Teotitlán del Valle that make shell candles. Is this tradition disappearing? Why?
In my opinion, making shell candles is a tradition that many people don’t find interesting because it’s a very laborious and detailed task that requires all your time and attention.
7. What do you want the world to know about making conch candles?
It’s an art and a very valuable craft for the people of our community and around the world.
